Call for Entries: Blackboard Launches First-Ever Hackathon for Developers and College Students
“Hackboard” invites participants to create innovative apps that will integrate with company’s flagship LMS to enhance the teaching and learning experience

WASHINGTON, DC, May 15, 2017 – As part of the company’s continued commitment to openness, Blackboard today launched its inaugural “Hackboard” Hackathon. The contest challenges developers and college students in the United States to create a unique, user-friendly and impactful application that will integrate with the Blackboard Learn learning management system (LMS) to improve the teaching and learning experience.

To enter, developers and students must submit the code for their app along with a five-minute video demonstrating their integration and how it works. All entrants are also required to open source their project and create an IMS Global Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) Tool Provider that interacts with Blackboard REST APIs. The deadline to submit entries is June 19, 2017 at 8:00 AM ET.

In the first round of judging, a panel of experts from Blackboard, IBM and Amazon Web Services will review submissions based on the following criteria: innovation, user experience, quality, impact on the teaching and learning experience, technical difficulty, and presentation. Judges will select one winning student and one winning developer.  The winners will receive complimentary registrations to DevCon,  Blackboard’s annual developers conference, and BbWorld, Blackboard’s annual user conference, being held July 24-27, 2017 in New Orleans.

The winning developer will receive $2,000, a trophy, and a 20-minute session at BbWorld to present their project. The winning student will receive a trophy and a 20-minute session at BbWorld to present their project. At DevCon, each winner will also have five minutes to pitch their integration to the audience. Votes will be solicited from the audience through Blackboard’s conference app to determine one overall People’s Choice Award winner.

With a long history of supporting the development of integrations and customizations, Blackboard is committed to interoperability standards and openness. Since 2001, the company has given customers choice in the way they implement their solutions. Blackboard also maintains an active and robust development community that includes over 3,500 registered developers who have created over 3,200 integrations to date.

“Blackboard Learn is designed to be part of a larger educational ecosystem and we are committed to providing an open environment for our clients and partners that offers the tools to integrate with and extend the product to meet their needs,” said Tim Tomlinson, Chief Product Officer at Blackboard. “We look forward to seeing the innovative applications that participants will integrate with our platform. We encourage any developer or student to enter who wants to test their skills, expand their knowledge, and have the opportunity make a difference in online learning.”
