Blackboard Helps K-12 School Districts and Teachers Make Digital Learning Materials More Accessible for Students
Company's accessibility solution, Blackboard Ally, is now available to support K-12 schools, districts and teachers in improving the accessibility of digital class content within the LMS

WASHINGTON, October 24, 2017 -- Blackboard Inc. today announced that Blackboard Ally is now available for multiple learning management systems used by K-12 school districts, empowering educators and administrators nationwide to build more inclusive digital learning environments that better meet the needs of all students.

First released earlier this year to support higher education institutions, Blackboard Ally is an accessibility solution that helps make digital class content in a learning management system (LMS) more accessible for all learners. It is currently available in the latest release of Blackboard Learn with the Original experience, as well as Moodlerooms, Moodle, and Instructure Canvas. It will also be available for additional platforms in the future.

Blackboard Ally is designed to integrate with a school district's existing LMS and automatically runs class materials through an accessibility checklist that looks for common accessibility issues. The solution generates a range of more accessible alternatives for the teacher's original content including Semantic HTML, audio, ePub, and electronic Braille. It provides teachers with guidance for improving accessibility of their digital class materials, while also supplying reporting on the current state of content accessibility at the class and district level.

"Blackboard understands that providing accessible content can be a significant challenge for teachers, schools and districts," said Nicolaas Matthijs, Product Manager of Blackboard Ally. "With Blackboard Ally, we hope to increase awareness of digital content accessibility, while also helping K-12 educators deliver the accessible materials their students need and deserve."
