Blackboard Announces Rebrand of Open-Source Learning Management System
New name, "Blackboard Open LMS," underscores the company's commitment to the open-source community and open standards

WASHINGTON, Sept. 19, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Blackboard Inc. today announced that it will rebrand its SaaS open-source learning management system formerly known as Moodlerooms as "Blackboard Open LMS." In conjunction with this change, the company is accelerating investment and development of the product.

The rebrand follows Blackboard's strategic decision to exit the Moodle Certified Partner Program. Blackboard remains committed to providing clients with the most mature and stable Moodle-based Software as a Service (SaaS) product in the market and will continue to support the Moodle project. The decision to exit the partner program allows Blackboard to focus its resources on continued development of the Blackboard Open LMS platform.

Since 2012, Blackboard has served as a leader in the open-source community. Moving forward, the company will accelerate investment in important functionality for Blackboard Open LMS, such as better support of IMS Global standards, enhanced in-product help and support features, continued focus on universal access and deeper integrations with critical third-party partners. In the last year, Blackboard has delivered several innovative new tools to the open-source community, including the Blackboard Ally accessibility solution and SafeAssign plagiarism prevention solution. The company will continue to focus on bringing new capabilities, services and products to the Moodle community, enhancing the learning experience.

"This rebrand marks a new chapter for our open-source SaaS product, where we're realigning the solution with our overall mission to meet the evolving needs of institutions and their learners," said Kathy Vieira, Chief Portfolio Officer at Blackboard. "Over the past year, we've seen a 20% growth in Blackboard Open LMS clients and are adding more than one new client per business day. We have a vested interest in continuing to contribute code and features back to the open-source community—and working to move the community forward together."
